When it comes to drywall finishing, many homeowners and builders stop at Level 4. While it works in most situations, certain spaces demand a higher standard. That’s where Level 5 finish comes in - the top tier of drywall finishing that delivers the smoothest, most seamless surface possible.

Where a Level 5 Drywall Finish Makes a Difference

Not every wall or ceiling requires a Level 5 finish. In fact, Level 4 is usually sufficient, but there are certain conditions where Level 5 is highly recommended:

  • Walls with direct sunlight - Natural light highlights every imperfection. Without a Level 5 skim coat or paint, you’ll see uneven textures between mud and drywall paper.

  • Ceilings with daylight exposure - Basements with no walkout windows can typically get away with Level 4, but any ceiling exposed to daylight will reveal flashing - the visible difference in sheen or texture.

  • High-end finishes like wallpaper - Installing wallpaper on a Level 4 wall may result in uneven adhesion or visible seams. Level 5 ensures the surface is perfectly smooth for a flawless installation.

What Causes “Flashing”?

Flashing happens when light bounces off the drywall and reveals the contrast between the joint compound and drywall paper. Even with three coats on screws and joints (the standard for Level 4), those differences can show under certain lighting conditions. A Level 5 finish eliminates flashing by creating a uniform surface across the entire wall or ceiling.

How Level 5 is Applied

There are two main ways to achieve a Level 5 finish:

  • Skim Coat - Usually two thin coats of joint compound applied across the entire surface. This is common in renovation projects but works in new builds as well.

  • Level 5 Paint - A specialty thick paint designed to provide the same smooth, uniform finish. Often used in new construction for efficiency.

It’s important to note: the Level 4 taping and sanding underneath must be perfect.

A Level 5 finish enhances the surface, but it cannot hide poor workmanship at earlier stages.

Why Choose Level 5?

If you want walls and ceilings that look seamless under any lighting, or you’re planning to add high-end finishes like wallpaper, Level 5 is worth the investment. It’s the extra step that elevates drywall from good to exceptional, ensuring your surfaces look smooth, consistent, and professionally finished.
